Last month we were blessed with a new addition to our family. This is Scarlett Anastasia, only the cutest little angel in the whole wide world. :) These are both done with Conte crayon...the first is from when she was 18 hours old, the second when she was three days (she is now all of 13 days old!).

A Few Different Things

I have been all over the place lately as far as creative projects. The last two days, I have been using my Conte crayons...these are both on 12x12 Mi Tientes paper (smoother side).

And here is a graphite drawing...not my usual thing or style, but it was pleasant to do.
And here's my really unique project the last little while, a quilt, which I am quite overly pleased with. :) It has been a long time since I've done anything like this, and now I fear that I am quite hooked on the quilting bug.

Here is a graphite drawing I started over a month ago and finished yesterday. I don't do drawings like this often (to say the least), which means this is probably the best one I've ever done. :) Good practice with graphite and terrific practice for studying values. Maybe I'll do more of these.

Watercolor Pencil/Watercolor WIP

Today I took progress shots of the sketch I was working on, with watercolor pencils and watercolor on top...sorry for the changing light in these and having to adjust the photos weirdly so you can see them. First I did a sketch with a very light purple pencil...which is a nice choice as it will all but wash away later if I make a lot of searching lines and such.And here I have blocked in the stripes with a golden ochre pencil.Then I layered more pencil on top, varying shading and colors to get vibrancy and texture in the stripes.
Then I wet on top with watercolor, adjusting colors, adding more shadow and background, and adding a few details.
I like this process more than just using pure pencil or pure watercolor...the pencil allows a lot of "drawing" and also leaves lines and texture under the watercolor, and the watercolor allows more vibrancy and nice washes.

This last weekend, I went to the zoo and was able to do a sketch. The composition wasn't my usual, but since they had just fed the zebras at their trough, I didn't have much of a choice...and I ended up really liking it.
A couple of days later, I did another sketch with watercolor pencils and watercolor on top...it was an off day and I was very dissatisfied.
So the next day I decided to do a mini-series with the same approach and palette...

And the next day continued the series. I will do at least a few more of these before possibly moving on, who knows...but I think I'm getting somewhere, I feel the need to practice and gain more consistency with what I do in water media.

And I managed a few plein air sketches at the lake this weekend again. All in my pocket watercolor Moleskine, the first with watercolor (when we got a bit drenched by the intermittent drizzle), the next two done today with watercolor pencils.

Vacation Watercolors

We recently went home for vacation, and I took my watercolors and watercolor pencils...**and I actually used them**! :) So here they are...the first one was done from the Sky Mall magazine (this is some weird ceramic garden statue) when I was bored on the flight...regular Moleskine, ink and watercolor.
Two from camping near Yellowstone park...the little pine is ink and watercolor pencil, the campsite is straight watercolor.
The lake near where we were camping. I tried doing straight watercolor and didn't like it, so added the ink...I never like it as well when I do the ink second, but oh well.
I also have several pages of color mixing, as I was very inspired by the desert colors (much greener than normal this year!)...
This one, done out in the desert areas, is straight watercolor on a little tiny Strathmore "Art Card" Illustration Board, 2x5, 3.5...really fun surface for watercolor, so I bought a big stack of these to use.

Ink and watercolor, small Moleskine (trying out a "brush pen"...it ended up a bit Oriental...). I really wanted to do the sagebrush justice, but I think I need more practice. Absolutely gorgeous color, as I've mentioned...
And I spent some time at the little zoo...where they had a baby zebra of all things! Ha! This, however, is one of the mares...watercolor pencil and watercolor in my pocket Moleskine. (Yes, done from life.)
Here is the little guy--again from life, watercolor pencil and watercolor in my pocket Moleskine...somehow got his neck way too long and the colors ended up a bit muddy in this one, but I was very happy to get to spend the time to do these.
And the last one I managed, at a local lake. I was very pleased with the ink and watercolor in this one, which is again in my pocket Moleskine.
It was a great vacation and I was very pleased to have gotten some sketching in!

Two days ago, I did a bit of studio cleaning. I found this old ink and wash picture I did a couple of years ago. (I believe that is the 2007 Kentucky Derby winner.) And over breakfast the next day, I wondered, why is this the only image like this that I've ever done? So I set out searching for a likely sketch to try it again.
I came across this terribly failed watercolor painting and thought it would make good practice. Unfortunately, I think I did some of the same mistakes as in the first (too much ink in some places and not enough control overall), but at least I can look at this and not cringe now. :)
Also, I'm pleased to note that my anatomy knowledge has grown a great deal since the first image!

A Plethoric Update

Well, I haven't updated my blog. Obviously. My excuse is that I've been thinking to move to a "regular" site (please note I have provided a link to it on the left), but I suppose that is no reason not to update here. So, in no particular order, here are a few sketches and such from the last...while. :) I've no idea if anyone actually looks at this, but if you do, thank you.

This is my first digital sketch, by the way. Done with a mouse in TwistedBrush (the free version). I now have a Wacom tablet, so I will be doing more digital sketches in the future.
Probably since about the time of my last post, I have been enthralled by a two-volume book set called "Drawn to Life", which is the lecture notes of Disney animator Walt Stanchfield. I could write pages of praise for this book and would recommend it to absolutely anybody. He teaches things that I never thought were even *teachable*. Anyway, one of my current goals is to do a *lot* of "gesture" drawing. I won't post it all here as a) it would be way too much and b) it's not really anything special to look at. But I'll post some on occassion, possibly with thoughts drawn from that book and maybe someone somewhere will find it of use or inspirational enough to find a few seconds or minutes to work on your own. The following are all of the same equine pose, getting slightly better (I hope) as I worked and tried to put into practice things from that book. I won't go into anything specific here, but maybe later I will.

Here is a page of gesture sketches, an idea I came up with myself based on one idea Stanchfield mentions repeatedly...the idea of what he calls "kinesthesia", or kind of "feeling" the pose in your own body/mind. I took it one step further and decided to draw my own pose by "feel" (no mirror or any other reference other than looking down at my own feet).
And, finally, a conte crayon drawing I did this afternoon (after doing a number of pages of gesture sketches, not shown).

Also, I have been very keenly interested of late in anatomy (specifically equine). I am putting together an equine anatomy model and having a ridiculous amount of fun doing it. Here are a couple of pictures of the organs I've painted. :) Gruesome, eh?

It has taken me almost two years to finally paint a picture of my son. He's so cute it's intimidating! :p I finally buckled down with some oil pastels and did this the other day. It was quite the struggle, I wasn't sure I was ever going to get a likeness...and then I did! This is about 9x12, oil pastel on Colourfix paper.

I was watching Star Trek IV tonight and playing with some new pencils and paper, and suddenly decided to draw Spock. It's been years since I've done a real drawing of a person (or a Vulcan). This is far from perfect, but...not too bad, considering. I did this from my paused movie, approx. 11x14.

Plein Air at the Zoo

I brought my watercolor pencils and a new sketchbook along to the zoo yesterday and managed a quick sketch. I am rather distressed that I managed to get the perspective of the zebras vs. the landscape so very wrong (the zebras are entirely too small). But, live and learn I suppose. Actually overall I'm happy with this because usually my watercolor pencil work is entirely too stiff, and here I managed something a little closer to what I actually want to achieve. I really dig the zebras themselves, so I'm including a detail shot of them. This is about 6x9.

Yesterday I was out and about taking some pictures of the countryside. I went around a bend I've been on dozens of times, and was surprised to see a few horses. This is from one of the pictures I took, approx. 4x6 (and using a new pencil I bought). I believe this cute guy is a yearling.I just finished this one from a German magazine (St. Georg, April 2009, photo credit: Rau), working on understanding form and shape and anatomy. Again, 4x6, started with the same pencil but wasn't getting the results I wanted so I switched to my trusty old mechanical at the end.

This drawing is of my very first Mother's Day flower, which I drew on Sunday, appropriately enough. :) And this small 4x5 sketch I just finished, from some video footage I took at the zoo today (before I got rained out and soaked to the bone), of a colt playing with his mama. I feel very blessed to have been able to get so many references of the awesome zebra herd at the zoo!

I was so pleased with my sketch that I decided to do a "full" drawing of this horse. It has been years since I've done a larger drawing with no time constraints. It was enjoyable and I loved doing those dapples! This is 9x12 on Bristol vellum using a mechanical pencil.

Horse Breed: Mangalarga Marchador

This breed hails from Brazil (obviously of Spanish descent), what beautiful horses! They are a gaited breed, so they have an ultra-smooth gait not common to non-gaited horses. I am a little bit excited because this drawing has got to be the best drawing I have ever done. I'm not sure why all of a sudden my drawing should have improved by such a measure, though obviously my practice this year is doing some good! This is also the first time I've used my trusty mechanical pencil for a few weeks, so maybe that had something to do with it, and there must be something about dapple gray horses because the last one I drew (back in February) I saw a marked improvement in my drawing, as well. (The reference for this drawing comes from the Wikipedia article on this breed.)

The second is a very *quick* zebra foal sketch, working on speed and getting form down as quickly as possible. The third I did this morning...when I don't know what to draw, zebras are always a good choice!

This week I did the first actual sketching at the zoo that I've managed to do in a very, very long time. It felt great! Hopefully I will be doing a lot this summer. :) This first picture I did right before my trip to the zoo, to warm up. It's from a photo I took of a little zebra filly I just fell in love with...This is that same filly, only sketched on location. Not real perfect, but...not all that bad, either, considering my long hiatus from practicing (and the inherent difficulty of sketching animals on location, period).

Here's a Przewalski horse, again done at the zoo...fairly rough, but I could tell that my drawing work the last few months has really made a difference for me, so I'm pleased. I just need to get quicker at capturing the general form. And no zoo visit is complete without little Eisbaer Flocke...and now her new boyfriend, Rasputin! (Apparently the language barrier between Eisbär and белый медведь is not so difficult to surmount.) --Incidentally, unless you know me really well, you have no idea how surprised I was to discover Flocke's new friend a few weeks ago, especially since he's named Rasputin! Oh, too funny...

Horse Breed: Norwegian Fjord

This is one of the oldest breeds of horse...like the Icelandic, they are very strong and even if they technically fall short of being a "horse" (ie, in other breeds they would be ponies), they are always considered a horse. One of the neat aspects of this breed is their mane and tail hair, which is white or cream on the outside and dark in the middle. Their manes are usually cut to accentuate this feature. They are always a dun color, though there are five types of dun in the breed.

Who knew that Canada had horses? Well I guess it *does* go to figure, since they have the Mounties. Unfortunately, I couldn't actually find a picture of a Mountie on a Canadian horse, as they are a fairly rare breed these days. (The horse I mean, lol...maybe the Mounties, too.) :)

This rather unusual breed hails from India. Back in the day, they could only be owned by royalty and top military officers, and were also used for religious ceremonies, etc. I don't think they are the only horse breed with such curled ears, but it's certainly a fairly unique feature!

New Sketchbook

Someone at WetCanvas (KerryOriginals) whose sketches I have particularly liked mentioned using a particular sketchbook and pencil. So on a whim, I decided to order said sketchbook and pencils. The sketchbook, here, is awesome, with probably 300 pages in it, and it looks like it should be a magical book:

Horse Breed: Hackney

The Hackney is an English trotting horse with a really beautiful gait. For these two drawings, I used my new ebony lead pencils, which are so cool. Unlike regular graphite, it's very easy to get good darks with these pencils, and I really like how they work on the smooth-yet-slightly-textured paper I've been working on.

Horse Breed: Appaloosa

I suppose everyone knows what an Appaloosa is. :) Especially if you took Idaho History. (Seeing as how it's my state horse!) These horses have a very interesting and rather sad history, along with the Nez Perce tribes of Idaho/Washington/Oregon. We are lucky to still have them today, though in a slightly different form than the "original" version bred by the Nez Perce. They are definitely beautiful!

These horses are delightfully cute. I did a couple of interpretations of the same foal, because I really liked his wild hair (well what do you expect from a Gypsy horse?) and wanted to see how the same pencils would look and work on different types of paper. The first image is my regular mechanical pencil, and the other three are my Graphitint pencils on various surfaces...sketch paper, Hahnemuehle cold press watercolor, and Bristol vellum finish (a smooth hot pressed paper).

This last week's breed I didn't get around to doing a lot for. But they sound like delightful horses. One of their special characteristics is a natural gait which is a very smooth trot. They are descended from Spanish stock brought to the New World and are known for their great endurance and ability to travel over difficult terrain.

Last week's horse breed was one which I was not familiar with, but I fell instantly in love with them, the American Bashkir Curly. As the name indeed implies, these horses have fairly long coats which are, to varying degrees, curly. I just want to give them a big ol' hug!

I really hesitate to post these, quite honestly, they are so bad. :) But you know, I'm going to do it anyway, because you win some, and you lose some, and then you learn and improve. In theory. :) The drawing isn't really "so" bad, though I'm still struggling with the pencil-only drawings, it's just not my medium.
This one, though, looks like a third-grader did it. I can't believe it's so terrible. But it's okay. I can laugh at myself. This is actually my very very first try with gouache, and I really like the properties of the paint, I just need to learn how to use it and such. I keep wanting to go back to fix this, but the paint's already getting a little thick and I'm sure it is going to threaten to flake off the page eventually, anyway. Well, all I can say is that a black horse was *not* an inspired choice for my first foray into this medium.

Horse Breeds: Icelandic

I am late in posting this, but the breed for last week was the Icelandic horse. It's a very interesting (and cute and cuddly) breed. They are actually very small for horses, but are still called horses and not ponies as they are considered to be an adult's riding horse, in one day they can go 35 miles carrying 155-220 pounds. They also have an interesting gait which is rather unique to them called the "skold" which is similar in speed to a trot but much smoother. They are, of course, from Iceland, where there is a law in place that, due to the closed nature of the breed (and their susceptibility to disease), they may be exported, but they may never return to Iceland, and no foreign horses may be brought into the country. As for my drawings this week, I am not really happy with the first one (I cringe seeing where I placed the withers) as I was having difficulty with their deceptively simple proportions. This is in my large 11x14ish book.

This started out as a watercolor. But I'm never happy with watercolor. So then I finished most of it with watercolor pencil. I was reasonably pleased until I totally messed up the sky. So I fixed that at home later with oil pastel and I am again reasonably pleased. When we moved here, I thought we'd have more snow. It's just an occasional coating of the ground. I made parts of this too green, but I am quite pleased with how I captured the fields, I think I got their essence, more or less.

I have started a new project for the year. Fifty-two weeks of horses! One breed every week. I am so excited!! The first image is pencil, I will say it is 11x14 even though I haven't measured it, the second is Graphitint pencil, approx 7x7, where I was trying to capture the beautiful rose gray color of this fellow's coat. Since Graphitint pencils are new for me, I was only mildly successful (though someone did tell me she could tell it was rose gray!).

More playing with oil pastels...

I toned the paper with water soluble crayons (NeoColor II) and loved the effect of the purpleish color showing through.
